Your Disney Summer Reading List

It's officially Summer, and in the United States, we all know a trope of Summer of the reading list. Well, this one will be a little different because all the books are Disney related! Here are some of our favorite Disney-related books:

Planning a Vacation?

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World

The Unofficial Guide the only guide you need. Created by the people of Touringplans.com, what we love about the Unofficial Guide is that it is honest and balanced. Being unofficial means they can say honest things and it's not just one big advertisement for Disney. And honest things, they say. Not only that, but it's extensive. You will find information about rides, restaurants, hotels, getting around, as well as real testimonials and editorials from readers over the years. Each year, a new unofficial guide comes out. Even though we know Disney inside and out, we always enjoy reading the newest edition.

Want to Make the Kids Read Too?

Who Was Walt Disney?

This entire children's book series is fantastic, but of course, this is a Disney list, so we can't forget this one. If you want your kids to know more about who Walt was, this is the book we recommend. Other "Who Was" books we love include "Who Was Amelia Earhart" and "Who was Jane Goodall".

The Kingdom Keepers series

For kids a little bit older, they'll love these chapter books. Have you ever fantasized about being trapped in Disney World after dark? How about saving the heroes from the villains? These are so much fun and incorporate Disney characters and Disney World scenes.

Feeling Indulgent?

The Unofficial Disney Parks Cookbooks Set

We enjoy the unofficial cookbooks and we love how they can be tongue in cheek too. Do we own the Harry Potter and Game of Thrones cookbooks? Maybe. They are as fun to read as to try to cook the recipes. We like this boxed set because it includes Disney Parks, EPCOT, and Disney Restaurants. The only thing we think might be missing is the Disney Drinks cookbook which an be purchased separately.

Eat Like Walt: The Wonderful World of Disney Food

Not wanting to cook something, but interested in knowing how the food at the Disney theme parks came to be? This book details how Walt and others developed the food for Disneyland, along with lots of photos and concept art.

Want to Dive Deep into Disneyana?

Queens of Animation

This is a fascinating look at the Disney studios history through the eyes of the women. Learn how women contributed to the changing ways that Disney portrays females on screen, all the way from Snow White to Frozen and beyond. Having read this book, I know I will never look at the mural in the Contemporary Resort, created by Mary Blair, the same way again.

Since the World Began

Is it the most up-to-date Disney book on my shelf? No. But I adore it. I adore it because it was given to me by a friend at the end of my internship at Walt Disney World and somehow I felt the book captured exactly how I felt about Walt Disney World, why I loved it, and why I believed in it. Also, it's kind of fun to remember what Walt Disney World was like in the late 90s.

The Story of Disney: 100 Years of Wonder

You might have seen this book in your resort hotel as coffee-table reading. This is the more up-to-date companion of the above book, and was the official companion to the Disney 100 touring exhibition.

Dream It! Do It! My half century creating Disney's magical kingdoms by Marty Sklar

Part memoir, part business book, Disney Imagineering legend Marty Sklar talks about his 50 years in Imagineering, along with some business know-how. If you love to hear about the history of Disney things, this is the book for you.

Travels with Walt Disney: A Photographic Journey Around the World

This is a book of photographs from Walt's many travels. If you've admired the black and white photos of Walt in Europe that grace the halls of the Riviera Resort, you'll love this book.

Want to Learn from the Best?

Be Our Guest: Perfecting the Art of Customer Service

This official book by the Disney Institute is as close as you get to Day 1 training for Walt Disney World employees. Having worked there myself, I can confidently say no one takes customer service more seriously than Disney. It is the first thing you learn and single most important thing, aside from safety, at the parks.

If there's one thing we love as much as Disney, it's reading, so we're confident you will find something on this list you love. But if we're missing something, we want to know (so we can read it, of course!)! Come tell us over on our Facebook page, and don't forget to follow us so you can see new articles when they are posted. Until next time...
