Time to Open Our D23 Presents: Film News

We've said it before: the bi-annual D23 announcements are like Christmas, and this year, there are some big presents under the tree. In this article, we will examine the news related to films and series coming from Disney Studios.

D23, or more properly, the D23 Expo is what Disney markets as the ultimate Disney fan event. It happens every other year in Anaheim, California, and tends to be the place where Disney drops announcements about plans for films, the cruise line, and the parks. We pay very close attention to the words used at D23 because we've learned that Disney never drops a hint carelessly. They are either gauging reactions or building up to something they aren't quite ready to announce. But in addition to hints, there are official announcements. Basically, by the time something has made its way to D23 to be announced, Disney has committed to the project and only the most extreme circumstances (like the pandemic forcing Disney to scale back on some of the EPCOT re-imagining plans). Because of the wealth of announcements all in one place at one time, we call this the most wonderful time of the year.

How we're feeling about the studio announcements

Our first impression is that this is a lot of sequels and we prefer originals, though we are very excited about the new Star Wars series and the new Agatha series. Because we love Moana, we're also personally excited about Moana 2.

Other sequel announcements leave us feeling disappointed. With both Toy Story and Frozen, we feel like a great story was already told and wrapped up nicely in a bow. We feel Toy Story 3 should've been the end of that franchise. And Frozen 2 was perfection for that franchise. Add to it that many fan theories indicate that Elsa metaphorically died in Frozen 2 by going "into the unknown" and that's why it was natural for Anna to become queen, and we feel like that story has been told as well. Who knows? Perhaps Disney will pop out something that wraps an ongoing story even more nicely, and we won't complain about seeing more Kristoff, who we now think is the ultimate gentleman. Do we have a crush on an animated character? Mayyyyyybe.

The thing we are most excited about is Snow White live action, followed closely by Agatha All Along. We also know that our Disney+ account will be getting more use between the Star Wars and Marvel series coming, which we always follow closely.
