Things I learned in the Disney College Program
Several years ago, I made a quick decision to apply for the Disney College Program. I was between majors and I loved Disney, and thought a semester "off" working at Disney would do just the trick to help me find out who I really was.
Well, I was half right/ half wrong. But what I learned changed me forever. To really learn these things, and by that I mean learn them in your heart and internalize them, you would have to do the College Program or something similar as well, but at least I hope to give you something to think about in this post.
*I can leave everything and everyone I know for a little while and survive.
*The appearance of hygiene matters
*I can control a crowd with just my voice and gestures
*Even something pretty on the outside is not always pretty on the inside
*My Chinese roommate gets really offended when I melt cheese on my rice. In fact, I might be the only one around who understands cheese.
*The open handed or two finger point are the only acceptable ways to point.
*Dinoland is spooky after hours.
*The appearance of calm is sometimes more important than actually being calm.
*Your attitude defines how people interact with you.
*Sometimes homesickness hurts physically.
*It is possible to miss winter (but not too much).
*Florida does not have a good selection of cheeses.
*You can derive joy from the joy of others you don't even know.
*Walk-in freezers are fun!
*Your 5 roommates you didn't know 3 months ago will become family. You will spend Thanksgiving and Christmas together.
*Speaking of which, baking a turkey takes longer than one would expect.
*Rainy days are magical.
*You can work harder and longer than you think you can.
*Hydrate!
*Eat! Preferably well balanced food, but sometimes chili from a can.
*If a hurricane is coming and you haven't hit the stores 24 hours ahead of time, they will be out of what you need.
*Touring the parks alone can be really liberating.
I hope you enjoyed this post. If you are considering the College Program, or have done it, share your story with us on our Facebook page! See you next week!
