5 Surprising Things You Can't Buy at Disney
Walt Disney World is a magical, and expensive, place that some would say runs on capitalism. However, there are a few items that you cannot buy at Walt Disney World, no matter how much you are willing to pay.
Gum
Have you ever been to a theme park or state fair or other public place and noticed the black, tar-like splotches all over the pavement? Or been sitting at a table and reached your hand under and felt a sticky bump where there shouldn't be one?
For reasons unknown, people suffer an inability to properly dispose of gum in a trash can, sometimes spitting or sticking it wherever they feel is convenient. And chewing gum, once stuck in a place, is extremely difficult and unsanitary to remove.
In wanting to keep the Disney parks clean, gum is not readily available. You can bring it in, but you can't buy it anywhere on Disney property. This is basically a lesson in "why we can't have nice things".
Pepsi
You know how when you dine out, the restaurant may have Pepsi or may have Coke, but typically not both? Well, Walt Disney World is one big establishment and they are Coca Cola all the way. If you must have your Pepsi, you will need to bring it in or have it delivered by a grocery delivery service from outside the Coca Cola zone of Walt Disney World.
Plastic straws
It started at Disney's Animal Kingdom, where straws and drink lids of any sort were banned for a long time for the safety of the animals. But now, some pretty fine paper straws are made, and Disney not only uses them at Animal Kingdom but as the default straw at all theme parks now.
(Ok, I lied a little bit on this one. You CAN ask for a plastic straw, but not at Disney's Animal Kingdom.)
Also, at Disney's Animal Kingdom only....
Balloons
Deflated balloons and the strings on them can get into animal enclosures and are bad for the animals.
Selfie Sticks
Not only can you not buy selfie sticks, but you can't even bring them into the park. This seems another example of "this is why we can't have nice things". Disney is selfie-worthy. Every day, vloggers are in the park, recording their every move. Can you imagine if a large number of people were doing this with extendable sticks in a crowded park? Not good. So Disney says you can't.
